Competition Math

Middle School Lessons

In Canada, serious math competitions begin in middle school. Notable math contests suitable for middle school students include the AMC 8, organized by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) in the United States, as well as the Gauss 7 and Gauss 8 contests organized by the University of Waterloo’s Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC) in Canada. While elementary-level math contests often focus primarily on fostering students’ interest and enthusiasm for mathematics, those at the middle school level and beyond increasingly serve to identify talented students and support selective admissions into advanced high school programs, such as IB or AP classes.More Information…

High School (Secondary School) Lessons

High school represents the core phase for mathematics competitions, with specialized contests available for each grade level from G9 to G12. In the United States, the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) organizes a tiered structure of exams, including the popular AMC 10 and AMC 12, as well as the more advanced AIME. Canada’s high school math contest scene is equally robust. Organized by the University of Waterloo’s Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing (CEMC), these include the Pascal and Fryer contests for Grade 9, and the Galois and Cayley for Grade 10, among others. These competitions vary in style and difficulty, but share a common goal: to provide talented students with strong mathematical aptitude a platform to showcase their abilities.More Information…
